The last century witnessed dramatic changes in the practice of health care, and coming decades promise advances that were not imaginable even in the relatively recent past. Science and technology continue to offer new insights into disease pathways and treatments, as well as mechanisms of protecting health and preventing disease. Genomics and proteomics are bringing personalized risk assessment, prevention, and treatment options within reach; health information technology is expediting the collection and analysis of large amounts of data that can lead to improved care; and many disciplines are contributing to a broadening understanding of the complex interplay among biology, environment, behavior, and socioeconomic factors that shape health and wellness. On February 25 - 27, 2009, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) convened the Summit on Integrative Medicine and the Health of the Public in Washington, DC. The summit brought together more than 600 scientists, academic leaders, policy experts, health practitioners, advocates, and other participants from many disciplines to examine the practice of integrative medicine, its scientific basis, and its potential for improving health. This publication summarizes the background, presentations, and discussions that occurred during the summit.

While there have been many claims of the benefits of teas through the years, and while there is nearly universal agreement that drinking tea can benefit health, there is still a concern over whether the lab-generated results are representative of real-life benefit, what the risk of toxicity might be, and what the effective-level thresholds are for various purposes. Clearly there are still questions about the efficacy and use of tea for health benefit. This book presents a comprehensive look at the compounds in black, green, and white teas, their reported benefits (or toxicity risks) and also explores them on a health-condition specific level, providing researchers and academics with a single-volume resource to help in identifying potential treatment uses. No other book on the market considers all the varieties of teas in one volume, or takes the disease-focused approach that will assist in directing further research and studies. Interdisciplinary presentation of material assists in identifying potential cross-over benefits and similarities between tea sources and diseases Assists in identifying therapeutic benefits for new product development Includes coverage and comparison of the most important types of tea - green, black and white

You probably know that food, water, sunlight, and oxygen are required for life, but there is a fifth element of health that is equally vital and often overlooked: The Earth’s magnetic field and its corresponding PEMFs (pulsed electromagnetic fields). The two main components of Earth’s PEMFs, the Schumann and Geomagnetic frequencies, are so essential that NASA and the Russian space program equip their spacecrafts with devices that replicate these frequencies. These frequencies are absolutely necessary for the human body’s circadian rhythms, energy production, and even keeping the body free from pain. But there is a big problem on planet earth right now, rather, a twofold problem, as to why we are no longer getting these life-nurturing energies of the earth. In this book we’ll explore the current problem and how the new science of PEMF therapy (a branch of energy medicine), based on modern quantum field theory, is the solution to this problem, with the many benefits listed below: • eliminate pain and inflammation naturally • get deep, rejuvenating sleep • increase your energy and vitality • feel younger, stronger, and more flexible • keep your bones strong and healthy • help your body with healing and regeneration • improve circulation and heart health • plus many more benefits

After the vicious, insect-like aliens called the Saurons invaded Earth and killed billions, they enslaved the survivors, forcing them to build mysterious temples under brutal conditions. In an effort to control their human slaves, the Saurons install a puppet president to keep them under control. But President Alexander Franklin and Chief of Security Jack Manning aren't about to play along. Rebellion is in the air, and the fight for freedom is spreading far and wide, from the center of activity in Washington to the distant lands of Guatemala. A diverse group of rebels, including an ex-FBI agent, a doctor inside the heart of enemy territory, and the president will have to band together with a host of other insurgents from across war-torn Earth to overcome impossible odds if they're to save what's left of humankind. With non-stop action and a remarkable cast of characters, the epic conclusion to William C. Dietz’s DeathDay is a thrilling tale of adversity, rebellion, strength and humanity in a futuristic world where the survival of the many lies in the hands of the brave few.

Every company has a personality. Does yours help or hinder your results? Does it make you fit for growth? Find out by taking the quiz that’s helped 50,000 people better understand their organizations at OrgDNA.com and to learn more about Organizational DNA. Just as you can understand an individual’s personality, so too can you understand a company’s type—what makes it tick, what’s good and bad about it. Results explains why some organizations bob and weave and roll with the punches to consistently deliver on commitments and produce great results, while others can’t leave their corner of the ring without tripping on their own shoelaces. Gary Neilson and Bruce Pasternack help you identify which of the seven company types you work for—and how to keep what’s good and fix what’s wrong. You’ll feel the shock of recognition (“That’s me, that’s my company”) as you find out whether your organization is: • Passive-Aggressive (“everyone agrees, smiles, and nods, but nothing changes”): entrenched underground resistance makes getting anything done like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall • Fits-and-Starts (“let 1,000 flowers bloom”): filled with smart people pulling in different directions • Outgrown (“the good old days meet a brave new world”): reacts slowly to market developments, since it’s too hard to run new ideas up the flagpole • Overmanaged (“we’re from corporate and we’re here to help”): more reporting than working, as managers check on their subordinates’ work so they can in turn report to their bosses • Just-in-Time (“succeeding, but by the skin of our teeth”): can turn on a dime and create real breakthroughs but also tends to burn out its best and brightest • Military Precision (“flying in formation”): executes brilliant strategies but usually does not deal well with events not in the playbook • Resilient (“as good as it gets”): flexible, forward-looking, and fun; bounces back when it hits a bump in the road and never, ever rests on its laurels For anyone who’s ever said, “Wow, that’s a great idea, but it’ll never happen here” or “Whew, we pulled it off again, but I’m tired of all this sprinting,” Results provides robust, practical ideas for becoming and remaining a resilient business. Yoga has been shown to promote flexibility, deep relaxation, strength, balance, coordination, and a general sense of well being. But for many busy people, joining a yoga class may be an unrealistic goal. Illustrated with lively color photographs, YOGA IN BED—a concept developed by an overworked yoga instructor who had no time to practice on his own—offers gentle stretches and guided meditations that can fit into anyone's schedule. Author and teacher Edward Vilga's goal is to make the practice of yoga accessible and fun, and he's chosen and named poses, from “Breakfast Bend” to “Winding Down Twist,” that are within the range of most healthy individuals, and easy to do in the comfort and privacy of home.

This inspirational book from two-time Emmy Award–winning journalist Mara Schiavocampo takes you on her journey of weight loss—and helps you shed pounds and find peace, health, and happiness in the process. Like so many people, Mara Schiavocampo struggled with her weight for most of her life. She tried every diet on the planet, suffered a debilitating eating disorder, joined a bizarre food cult, took dangerous pills, worked out incessantly—and still tipped the scales at nearly 230 pounds. But more than reaching a healthy weight, Mara wanted peace and freedom from the constant mental torment brought on by food. A healthy and effortless way of life. For the rest of her life. With those goals in mind, she transformed her habits. While juggling a marriage, new baby, and a budding television career as a correspondent on NBC, Mara “accidentally” stumbled onto a formula that worked for her. She lost ninety pounds in two years and is now stronger and fitter—and, most importantly, happier—than ever. The most surprising part her new lifestyle? “It’s not a chore, it’s a pleasure,” she says. In Thinspired, Mara shares her weight-loss secrets and the formula for her success plan. Instead of focusing on “Dos” and “Don’ts” she talks about eliminating the foods that have control over you—whether that’s wine, flour products, dairy, or sugar. By following in Mara’s footsteps, you’ll lose the pounds and gain back your energy, control, health, and happiness.
